It Shouldn’t Hurt to be A Child
“Child abuse casts a shadow the length of a
lifetime” says Herbert Ward.(Dream Catchers For Abused Children) Child abuse is a contamination of the
soul. Child abuse includes any type of
damage done to a child that affects a child’s physical or emotional
development. There are several types of child abuse; sexual, physical,
emotional and neglect. I was mostly drawn to physical child abuse because it
happens so often. Five children die every day in the United States because of
abuse and neglect. Some people think that child abuse “can” be used to
discipline their children. People who have suffered from physical child abuse
can develop disorders or become very violent.
Physical
child abuse has side effects. In the article “Child Abuse” the Columbia
University Press states that there are many effects to physical child abuse.
The results of child maltreatment are physical or mental impairment of a child
or death. Infants are more exposed to physical abuse.(Columbia University
Press) Other effects of physical abuse are anxiety, depression, truancy, shame,
guilt, and suicidal or homicidal thoughts. The Columbia University
Press also states that even though we are trying to decrease the number of
child abuse cases more than one million children are physically abused
annually.
In
the article “Mother Charged with Child
Abuse” Rebecca Clark explains that a mother in North Carolina physically
abused a 15 month old. Inconsistent
statements are usually illogical answers. (Clark.) When inconsistent statements
are given it is because the parent or abuser is lying. In this case the mother
of a 15 month old burned her child and he was put in a foster home while the
case was being investigated. This proves that a child can have negative effects
from being physically abused. In the article “Child Abuse and Neglect”, Pamela Daniel states that the most
visible type of abuse is physical abuse because you can tell by bruises on a
child’s body. She also states the factors that increase child abuse are if a
child has a mental disability, behavioral problems, caregivers abused as
children, and caregivers are unemployed or in poverty. This proves that
physical child abuse does have side effects on a child’s future life. (Daniel.)
Four
children died in Hartsville, SC in a house fire. The mother of those four
children was charged with unlawful conduct towards a child. The mother was also
charged with 4 counts of homicide. The outcome of this case was the death of
four innocent children. Another case in Las Vegas, Nevada shows how horrible
child abuse is and the outcomes of it on the child’s life. A couple was
arrested after their three year old daughter was found with scars, bruises, and
scabs. The mother in this case beat the three year old girl with a set of 15
keys in front of a witness. The little girl also experienced neglect from her
parents, they starved her and she only weighed 19 pounds. The little girl was
taken away from her parents by the Clark County’s Department of Family
Services.
People
who physically abuse children don’t think that the child that they abuse will
be hurt in several types of ways. They think that the child will learn to
behave or leave them alone. Physical child abuse is a very common problem that
is spread throughout the whole world. It causes side effects on a child’s
future life by making them develop disorders or mental disabilities. Other side
effects from child abuse can cause a child’s death. Physical child abuse can be
used to discipline children but it is not reasonable to beat a child to get
them to behave. Physical child abuse should be stopped.

In the article “Mother Charged with Child Abuse” Rebecca
Clark explains that a mother in North Carolina physically abused a 15 moth old.
Clark states that the 15- month old child had first and second-degree burns on
his hands and fingers. The mother gave inconsistent statements to the police
officers when they asked what had happened to the child’s hands. Inconsistent
statements are usually illogical answers. She also states that children who go
through physical abuse have to be kept at foster care pending until further
investigation is made by the Social Services. The main idea that Clark tries to
get through is that children about the age are being physically abused and then
they have to be kept at foster homes.
This article helped me
with my research because it was recent and credible. It also happened in North
Carolina, which makes it seem like child abuse is very common around South
Carolina. I also learned that children are kept at foster homes when the Social
Services investigate the child maltreatment.

sexual, physical, and emotional abuse.
She claims that child abuse should be stopped and that there are many
ways to try and stop it. Some ways to stop abusers from abusing a child are to
go to support groups to learn how to control themselves and to talk to mental
health professionals. She also states the factors that increase child abuse are
if a child has a mental disability, behavioral problems, caregivers abused as
children, and caregivers are unemployed or in poverty.
This article was very
helpful because it helped me to understand the differences between physical,
sexual, and emotional abuse. I learned that a factor that might increase the
chances of abuse is poverty. This article is very relevant because it is
written by a doctor and it is recent.

This article was very
beneficial to my research because it goes hand in hand with my hypothesis. This
article is credible and relevant. It has reliable statistics on child abuse. I
learned that about 2,000 children die annually because of child abuse and more
than one million children are physically injured each year.

Why Hurt A Child?
Hypothesis:
Physical child abuse has become a major
problem in today’s society. But, do we really know why people physically abuse
children? With this survey, I hope to gather some information that will answer
my question. My targeted audience will be teenagers. I think my audience will
respond that people physically abuse children to discipline them. Also, they
will respond that physical child abuse should be stopped and it’s an important
problem in today’s society.
Context:
When distributing my survey, I targeted
teens. The teens I targeted where in the
age group of 14-20 years old. I chose teens as my targeted group because teens
have a different perspective on today’s problems. After receiving very
constructive responses from my targeted audience, I would consider my results
effective and dependable. I asked a couple of opinion based questions that
required the people who took my survey to write out a respond. I can only
assume my responses were truthful. I do not think my survey was biased because
in my questions I did not influence anyone to answer a certain way. My survey
had questions that simply asked for a thoughtful answer. In my survey my
questions were kept similar throughout, I felt like the answers I got would
help me with my research. The responses I got back helped me answer some of my
thoughts of physical child abuse. I
think my survey was pretty comprehendible.

Data
Analysis:
When reviewing my data, I noticed a few
trends. The majority of the people answered the same for question two, four,
six, and eight. When they answered question 2 they checked majority of the
things that applied to physical child abuse. When they answered question four
the majority of them said “Yes” when they were asked “Do you think physical
child abuse affects a child’s future?” . When they answered question six, the
most common answer was that physical child abuse can lead to hearing loss,
vision loss, brain damage, depression, anxiety, withdrawal, and other: low
self-esteem, suicide, death, and bullying. When question eight was responded,
the most common answer was that they agreed that physical child abuse should
stop. This is somewhat of what I expected for my response.
Question one helped my research, 3 out
of the 28 participants said that physical child abuse was acceptable if you are
using it to discipline your child. This question was a true or false statement.
Majority of the teens who filled this survey said it was not acceptable. I
didn’t expect anyone to think that physical child abuse was ok if it’s used to
discipline a child.
Question nine was also beneficial for my
research because now I know that child abuse reports happen often. 12 out of the
28 teenagers who filled out the survey said that they hear a child report
often. 15 out of the 28 said that they didn’t really hear a child abuse report.
1 out of the 28 said they never heard a report on child abuse.
Questions five and ten helped me gain
the most valuable information for my research. Question five asked why they
thought people physically abuse children. The responses were somewhat similar;
most people said that it was because the abuser went through physical child
abuse themselves. Others said that it was to discipline their children or
because they had problems and took their anger out on the child. Question ten asked
if they thought people who went through physical child abuse should go through
therapies when as they grow up. 19 out of 28 teenagers said that they thought
children who were abused should and 9 out of 28 said maybe.
Conclusion:
My survey gave me a lot of valuable
information for my survey. I was somewhat right from what I thought in the
beginning to what my participants responded. My responses made me take a
different perspective on physical child abuse. I now know that child abuse
cases are common and they are an important issue in the United States, due to
my survey results.
Follow
Up:
With these survey results I would like
to go into deeper research with the side effects of being physically abused as
a child and what is done to help them overcome it afterwards. I will prove that
physical child abuse can cause the child to become an abuser themselves or
become very violent. I want to survey more people so I can have more variety of
answers.
